What Animation Adds to Multimedia
Animation shows change over time. It is useful when static images are not enough.
In multimedia, animation can explain a process, direct attention, simulate motion, improve feedback, and support storytelling.
Examples: a loading icon, an animated process diagram, a title reveal, an onboarding character, a moving interface cue.
Animation is most effective when it answers a question like:
- What changes?
- In what order?
- At what speed?
- What should the user notice?
If a process has multiple steps, animation can reduce explanation time by making the sequence visible.
Principles of Animation
Even simple digital animation becomes better when it follows core principles such as:
Timing
How long an action takes. Fast timing feels sudden; slow timing feels gentle or heavy.
Spacing
How movement is distributed between positions. Equal spacing creates mechanical motion. Uneven spacing creates more natural motion.
Anticipation
A small movement before the main action prepares the viewer.
Follow-through
Parts of an object may continue moving briefly after the main action stops.
Easing
Objects often accelerate and decelerate instead of moving at one constant speed.
In motion graphics and interface animation, these principles make motion feel intentional rather than awkward.
